Cosby, TN puts on a festival about its self each spring and fall called:  On Cosby.  This festival celebrates the best that Cosby has to offer. With a list off crafters as long as your arm ranging from homespun crafts to local authors, you can spend hours browsing through craft booths.  On one row you can spend your time visiting the political booths and another visit with nonprofit groups.  Still another option would be to head over and tuck into the food.  On Cosby is a great local festival surrounded by the beauty of the Smokies.

The craft show is a major part of the On Cosby festival.  Featuring 50-plus vendors, this show incorporates both traditional mountain crafts and a few things that you probably haven’t seen before.  Obviously the crafters try to bring items that they think the crowd will enjoy, so you will see lots of quilts, bears and log cabin home decor.  There are always a few things made only for the area such as the hillbilly wine glasses and paintings on old barn boards.  The creativity of the crafts-people at On Cosby never ceases to amaze.  The common, everyday item can become a work of art and an item that you may have discarded becomes somebody’s keepsake; truly it is a trash to treasure scenario.  There is even a local author selling autographed copies of her book and getting the word out about her novel, which takes place in the shadows of the Smokies.

This is a typical small town festival with all the usual baggage.  The back row of booths is dedicated to nonprofits and political campaigns.  Beside the Democrats and Republicans sit the Girls Scouts selling brownies and cupcakes.  Right next to a church’s youth group raising money for a trip is the Appalachian Bear Rescue booth.  All of the various groups around Cocke County seem to have come out to plug their issues and speak to the public.  And while the non-profits are speaking, the public is eating and being entertained.

Located in the center of the festival is the main stage.  This stage will host many different kinds of music over the three days of the festival.  Gospel is always a crowd favorite but there will be some local bluegrass thrown in for good measure. Between acts the DJ will keep the sounds of the Smokies playing you through your visit to the On Cosby festival.  Make sure to stop around the corner for a look back into Cosby’s past and visit the moonshine exhibit.  This representation shows why Cosby got its name of being the moonshine capital of the Smokies.

Toward the front of the festival is the line of food tents and booths.  Finger foods and full meals dot the row of booths.  The smell of BBQ wafting over the crowd is sometimes snuffed out by the smell of popcorn and cotton candy.  Drinks flow freely even though it is not that warm outside and the breeze brings the sound of children lining up for delicious ice cream.  On Cosby is definitely a festival to attend.  Bring an appetite; bring a chair to relax in and listen to the music; and bring your family for some good wholesome fun.

The 2011 “Spring Fling” Tennessee Goldwing Road Riders Association Rally & Show

The 2011 “Spring Fling” Tennessee Goldwing Road Riders Association Rally & Show will be held at the Sevier County Fairgrounds.

Honda Gold Wing motorcycles will take over Sevier County Fairgrounds on April 14-16 for the 2011 “Spring Fling” Tennessee Goldwing Road Riders Association Rally & Show. This year the event is hosted by the Wilderness at the Smokies Resort. In a weekend full of excitement, attendees will get the chance to attend seminars and discussion groups, participate in parades and win prizes, all the time spending time with other Gold Wing enthusiasts. This year the theme is Davy Crockett Days. Stop by and get to see some of the best looking motorcycles in East Tennessee.

The Tennessee Gold Wing Road Riders Association, the hosting organization, is the largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Gold Wing motorcycles. This group will spend time getting to know each other better and learning about the interest that they share, the Honda Gold Wing. They will have seminars on everything from stress management to listening and communicating. They will also have the ability to visit vendors that have come in just for this conference. Products ranging from gear for their bikes to clothing will be available to the members throughout the weekend.

Goldwing Riders will compete for the Grand Prize of a Bushtec Performance Sport Trailer, as well as the Second Place Grand Prize of $1,000 and two Chapter Prizes of $250 each going to the largest Tennessee Chapter and the largest representing chapter from outside the state of Tennessee. Cash prizes will also be awarded to winners of this year’s talent show in the categories of comedy, serious, and the outside Tennessee combined category.

The weekend’s main events schedule is as follows:

Thursday, April 14th:

  • Amateur Night & Campfire! 6-9pm –  Join us at the Fair Grounds for some ole fashion country fun!  Campfire Stew is from 6pm-7:30pm. Bring your lawn chairs, listen to the music, and dance in the field. You won’t want to miss the FUN of the Chapter Challenge from 7-9pm as Chapters vie for the title of “King of the Frontier!”  Their frontier skills will be tested in a variety of ways! (See below for more information re competing in this FUN but Dirty event!)
  • Bike Light Show at 9pm – (after Campfire and it’s dark) Classification to be held from 6:30-8pm. At the North Gate (Service Entrance).  Bikes will circle the fairgrounds/vendor area.

Friday, April 15th:

  • TN Couple of the Year 2011 Selection – Don’t miss this opportunity to come out and show your support for YOUR chapter Couple of the Year.  Selection starts at 11am sharp and doors will be closed at 11am.
  • Frontier Rodeo – Opening ceremonies will be held in the Exhibit Hall beginning at 6:30pm. Then join us at 8pm at the outdoor Arena for a professional RODEO! See the cowboys ride the bulls, watch the horses race for times, and enjoy the rodeo clowns!  FREE to first 1,000 FULLY registered event participants.

Saturday, April 16th:

  • ALL Best Dressed Competitions – No advance sign up required. Be at the Red Barn by 9:45am for sign in if you wish to compete.  Categories include Best Dressed-Parade, Best Dressed-Show, Best Dressed-Riding, and Best Dressed-Theme.  Both Individual and Group categories.  See www.tngwrra.org for guidelines.
  • Bike Show – Onsite at the Fair Grounds this year (weather permitting). Classification from 11am-12:30pm with Judging beginning at 1pm.
  • Talent Show – Talent Show will be held at 3pm in the Red Barn.  CASH PRIZES – OUT of STATE CATEGORIES!
  • Farewell with Awards/Prizes – After a day filled with activities including field events, bike show (onsite at the fairgrounds), seminars galore, and more, join us as we say thank you to all of you for attending.  Closing will be in the Exhibit Hall at 5pm.  Chapter Awards, TN Member of the Year, Chapter Educator of the Year, and more to be presented as well as Grand Prizes!

SPECIAL NOTICE:

~CHAPTER CHALLENGE – Will be held Thursday evening from 7-9pm in the outdoor Arena. Be sure you wear your ‘dirty’ clothes/shoes!  Each team will consist of five (5) members.  Chapters may have more than one team and teams may be all male, all female, or co-ed.  Out of State teams welcome to join the fun!  Come cheer on your favorite team(s).

Smoky Mountain Knife Works – A Destination Unto Itself

Smoky Mountain Knife Works is not only a great destination if you’re shopping for knives, but it’s also the location of the National Knife Museum. At Smoky Mountain Knife Works, you’ll learn about the history of the knife, as well as many other tools, as you shop for that perfect pocket or hunting knife.

There are very few retail stores or locations that become a destination unto themselves. Smoky Mountain Knife Works is one of those locations (along with Bass Pro Shops and Gatlinburg’s Arts and Crafts Community). People from all over the country make the big-blue-roofed building the first stop of their vacation as they enter Sevier County, the Gateway to the Smoky Mountains! Smoky Mountain Knife Works is one of the largest retail companies in the area (more than 80,000 square feet), but the building contains a lot more than just a shopping experience. Besides a store full of knives, knife accessories and kitchenware, the store contains one of the nation’s largest collections of trophy wildlife, indoor waterfalls, relics and artifacts of native people from around the world and employees that have more knowledge of the products they are selling than you will find anywhere else. It also houses the National Knife Museum.

The National Knife Museum is located upstairs above the showroom area as you come in the front doors. The exhibits have been gathered from the knife makers themselves and you will be able to view not only the knives but examples of the original advertising pieces that have become a true part of Americana. The museum covers the progress of the knife from early man using stone tools through the change to steel and beyond. If you are a knife enthusiast you will find yourself reading every word of text and examining each display. Spending hours going through the museum is not unheard of.

Even if you are not in the official museum area of the Knife Works, you will notice that the entire store is one huge collection. The walls are covered with displays covering every brand, every pattern, every kind of knife you could imagine. The showroom claims it is the largest knife collection in the world and we would have to say they are right. Besides the knives, you will be hard pressed to find a bigger or better exhibit of trophy wildlife from around the world. The exhibit covers animals from almost every continent, and patrons will have a hard time not being drawn to the animals covering the walls. You will also see some animals that don’t exist in nature like the elusive jack-a-lope. While you are there enjoying the displays, look for the moose with long-horn steer horns–another of their treasures and one of our favorites.

In the lower part of this something-for-everyone environment, you will find the relic area. Kevin Pipes, owner of Smoky Mountain Knife Works, has been a collector of Native American relics and artifacts since he was a child. Archeology is one of his passions and he has been able to collect artifacts from around the world, from east Tennessee to the Sahara Desert. In the artifact section of the Knife Works, you will see Neanderthal stone axes, arrowheads, head-pots from Peru and even crystal Clovis points – one of the most exotic raw materials used by stone-age man. This area was added, along with about 30,000 square feet of space, when the new addition opened in 2006.

Last, but certainly not least, the employees at the Knife Works provide great customer service. Whether you are ordering from one of the 325,000 catalogs they ship a month, ordering on the internet through www.smkw.com, or from the retail showroom, you will be treated like you are their top priority. And as far as their customer service goes the customer is their top priority. Smoky Mountain Knife Works employees roughly 250 employees, from their massive warehouse in Dandridge, TN to their call center, and those employees want to make sure that each customer has the best experience they can have. Knowledgeable and well trained, the staff at the Knife Works can answer any question you have about the products they sell.
